All horses intended for export are inspected by a vet from AsureQuality or by a designated private vet.
Occasionally the horse for export may develop a condition which may render it ineligible for export, between the time of vet inspection and transport to the port of departure.
If this should happen, it is your responsibility as the owner to report this to AsureQuality by phoning 0508 001122 and ask to speak to the Vets & Export Programme Specialist
Conditions which may cause the export to be delayed include:
Raised temperature
- Cough
- A ‘cold’ or snotty nose
- Runny eyes with inflammation
- Lameness
- Injury
- Wounds
- Swollen joints or legs
- Swollen glands
- Ringworm or active skin rash
- Colic
- Any infectious disease
You should also report this to the Exporter. The final certification of the horse for export is a decision to be made by the AsureQuality veterinarian following discussion with the Exporter or Private Veterinarian.
If in doubt, let the AsureQuality vet decide what should happen, rather than sending any doubtful horses to the airport.

Strangles Update July 2026
What AsureQuality are doing to reduce the spread of Strangles
Our vets will be carrying out the following after visits from each property:
- Washing hands/changing gloves between visits
- Cleaning and disinfecting any equipment used
- Using clean overalls
- Boot washes between properties (using Virkon)
- Following a hands-off approach (where possible) when inspecting horses
